Ethics of Mental Health Practice: Today, Tomorrow and the Future by Kathryn Krase, PhD, JD, MSW held on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 from 9am-4:30pm ET via Zoom.
This course brings real-world context to ethical concerns often experienced by professionals in practice. A foundation in boundaries and confidentiality will be set and then applied through conversations and case examinations including mandated reporting obligations and duties to protect. A further examination of ethical considerations will cover the increasing use of technology in mental health practice, including the proliferation of artificial intelligence. This course will provide a framework to contemplate ethical dilemmas and make informed decisions that insulate professionals from legal liability while protecting clients from harm.
This course content will address ethical and legal obligations of mental health professionals as they relate to a variety of issues. Various codes of ethics will be discussed, and general legal and ethical principles will be offered, as well.
The course objectives are:
- Describe the ethical and legal responsibility of mental and behavioral health professionals to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients.
- Describe the ethical and legal responsibility of mental and behavioral health professionals to protect client confidential information.
- Apply a framework to avoid boundary conflicts when using technology in their professional practice, whenever possible.
- Apply a framework to avoid breach of client confidentiality when using technology in their professional practice, whenever possible.
- Explain how to demonstrate that a client has not been exploited or coerced, intentionally or unintentionally, through the use of technology in professional practice.
