Course Description: This comprehensive continuing education course provides therapists and counselors with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively identify, assess, and treat clients impacted by narcissistic and cult abuse. Narcissistic and cult abuse are pervasive yet often misunderstood forms of psychological manipulation. These insidious forms of abuse can have devastating consequences for victims, leaving them with deep emotional scars, shattered self-esteem, physical illnesses and complex trauma. As mental health professionals, it is crucial to possess the knowledge and skills to recognize the signs of these types of abuse, provide effective therapeutic support, and navigate the unique modalities and legal considerations involved in working with survivors.
The course objectives are:
• Define and differentiate narcissistic personality disorder and other personality disorders within the Cluster B personality disorders.
• Identify the dynamics and tactics of narcissistic abuse in various contexts (romantic relationships, families, workplaces, political environments).
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of narcissistic abuse in clients.
• Develop effective therapeutic interventions for individuals recovering from narcissistic abuse.
• Understand the unique challenges and legal considerations in working with survivors of narcissistic abuse.
• Define cults and differentiate them from other groups and organizations.
• Identify the psychological and social factors that contribute to vulnerability to narcissists, sociopaths an psychopaths.
• Recognize the tactics used for recruitment and indoctrination.
• Develop strategies for helping clients who have been involved in cults of one or cults of many.
• Understand the importance of sharing the vernacular with clients to validate their experiences.
• Understand why group think scenarios are so dangerous for people and why independent thinking and autonomy are so important.
Vanessa Reiser is a mother, author, entrepreneur, 2X Ironman and ground-breaking licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), practicing in NY, NJ, MA, and FL, specializing in narcissistic and cult abuse. She is also the founder of Tell a Therapist, LLC and is best known for her run across the state of New York (285 miles in 11 days) in a wedding dress to raise awareness for narcissistic abuse. She also subsequently ran across NJ, CT & MA with plans to traverse Rhode Island in June, 2025. Her insights are both personal and professional, giving her a unique lens into this insidious form of domestic abuse.
Vanessa holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Southern California with a focus on community organizing.
