Death, Culture, and Spirituality: Cultivating Cultural Humility in End-of-Life Care by Jessica Johansson, M.Div. held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 from 9am-11am ET via Zoom.

Course Description: Participants will explore how diverse cultural and spiritual beliefs influence experiences of death, dying, and grief. The course presents practical strategies to integrate cultural humility into your clinical practice, improve communication, and offer compassionate support to clients from various backgrounds during critical life moments.

The course objectives are:

1. Understand the Intersection of Death, Culture, and Spirituality: Explore how cultural backgrounds and spiritual beliefs shape experiences and perceptions of death, dying, and grief among diverse communities.

2. Define Cultural Humility and Its Application in End-of-Life Care: Learn the principles of cultural humility and how to integrate them into practice to provide respectful and personalized end-of-life care.

3. Develop Strategies for Culturally Sensitive Communication: Enhance communication skills to effectively engage with clients from diverse backgrounds, honoring their cultural and spiritual needs during end-of-life situations.

4. Enhance Support for Diverse Clients Experiencing Grief: Identify practical approaches to offer compassionate grief support that acknowledges and respects the cultural and spiritual dimensions of clients’ experiences.

Reverend Jessica Johansson is a NEDA-Proficient End-of-Life Doula, Companion Animal End-of-Life Doula, Death Educator, and Interfaith Minister. In 2022, she founded Sacred Journey End-of-Life Services (End-of-Life Doula in Jaffrey, New Hampshire – Sacred Journey End-of-Life Services), offering comprehensive end-of-life care, bereavement support, and celebrant services in the Greater Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. In addition to her work with Sacred Journey, Jessica serves as the Director of Community Engagement for Life Forest Cemetery and is an active member of the Board of Directors for the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance. She regularly hosts Death Cafés and provides death education to healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses. Jessica also facilitates ongoing grief support groups, both in-person and online, offering ongoing support to individuals navigating the grieving process. Passionate about fostering open conversations around death and dying, Jessica is dedicated to offering compassionate support and education to individuals and their families, helping them navigate life’s final journey with care and understanding.
